The Online Training Programme

Three Units of the qualification are delivered by an online learning package:

  • Health & Safety
  • Productive Working Practices
  • Moving and Handling Resources

This training is a combination of video presentations and knowledge checks. It’s very similar to watching a YouTube video when you want to know something. After watching the video, you answer questions. We provide support at any time to help you go through the course.

We give you the details of how to access the training, you go online in your own time to complete the package and your assessor will give you feedback about it.

Getting Photos & Videos

NVQ Level 2 Dry Lining Finishing Assessment
Pictures supplied for your NVQ Level 2 Dry Lining Finishing must be of you working

First things first – this has to be your work as a Dry Lining Finisher. (Some years ago, a candidate tried to pass off photos that weren’t his. One of our staff recognised them from the B&Q website.)

Most Dry Liners have videos of jobs they have done. That’s great – but we need to see you working. Your assessor will guide you as to what is needed. You can take them with a mobile phone if you want. (We don’t need you to be Stephen Spielberg.) Just as long as the picture is clear and shows what you are working on. Keep the videos short – there’s a limit on file sizes for transfer. As with every other aspect of your assessment, we can help with file transfer if needs be.

Witness Testimonies

These have to be from people who are in the trades and know your work. They do not have to be Dry Liners, but need to know what they are talking about. Site Agents, Lead Contractors, Colleagues Employers, or if you only do ‘domestic’ jobs, other trades who have worked with you. They can all be filled out by one individual. Their knowledge of your work must be recent. The last three years is a good guide. We send the documents out to you with an envelope for their return. Here’s an example.

Your assessor will guide you as to who might be a good ‘witness’ in your case.

The Professional Discussion

Professional Discussion for Painting NVQ

When all the evidence has been gathered, the assessor will arrange your Professional Discussion with you. Think of it as a chat about your life as a Dry Liner. We usually do this over a video link such as Zoom or Teams and it is recorded. It’s really important you aren’t nervous about this interview. You wouldn’t be on this programme if we didn’t think it’s right for you. You will be talking about how you work and what you do. The assessor will gather evidence of your skills and knowledge from your answers.

This is the final part of the assessment. Your Dry Lining NVQ Level 2 is complete.

What Happens Next

SuperSkills has been getting people qualified (more than 6000 so far) since 2006. We’ve been with CSkills Awards since 2007 and have ‘Direct Claim Status’ for most of our assessments. That means when we have completed the assessment and gone through an internal quality assurance process, we can claim the qualification from the awarding body without further review.

(If you’re using our ‘Easy Payment Scheme‘ and you have an outstanding balance, we will call you to see if you want to pay it off at this stage. It’s entirely up to you. However, we won’t claim the qualification until the account is settled.)

When we claim the qualification, the awarding body will generate the certificate. They say 8 working days for this to happen. That’s two weeks in real time. Sometimes the certificate arrives within a week, sometimes three weeks. Usually it’s about two weeks. We have no control over this timescale.

The day the certificate arrives with us, we send an electronic copy to you. You can use this to apply for the Blue CSCS Card. We put the original certificate into First Class Post and it normally arrives with you the next day.

We pride ourselves on a quick, simple and convenient process that makes getting your NVQ Level 2 in Dry Lining Finishing as simple as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Dry Lining Finishing NVQ Level 2 get a CSCS Card

Having the NVQ Level 2 in Dry Lining Finishing will enable you to get a Blue ‘Skilled Worker’ CSCS Card – you need to have passed the CITB Health & Safety Test for Site Operatives within the last two years as well

What qualifications do I need as a Dry Lining Finisher

The basic qualification for site work is the NVQ Level 2 in Dry Lining Finishing

Is this qualification suitable for somebody who does Taping & Jointing?

Yes it is – Taping & Jointing is just another way of describing the trade that is known to the awarding bodies as ‘Dry Lining Finishing’. (It’s also called ‘Ames Taping’ in some parts of the country, so rest assured, it’s the right qualification for Ames Tapers as well.

How long does a Dry Lining Finishing nvq take

Usually four to six weeks, depending on the candidate’s level of skill at the beginning and how quickly they progress through the work

How is the evidence for the Dry Lining Finishing NVQ obtained

The candidate take photos and videos of their work. Full support and guidance is given by their assessor

What is a Dry Lining Finishing NVQ

The level 2 NVQ in Dry Lining Finishing is aimed at those who have had some (usually over a year) experience working as a carpenter and have skills and capabilities developed in the workplace.
The evidence of how they work is set against the National Occupational Standards for their trade and when they meet/exceed the standards, the NVQ is awarded.

What does being a CITB Approved Training Organisation mean

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) keeps a list of training companies that meet its standards for how training should be given.
Approved Training Organisations have to have the right staff for the qualifications offered and standard delivery systems that reflect good practice
Approved Training Organisations are audited annually to make sure they are keeping to the required standards.

I have a Level 2 Certificate in Dry Lining Finishing. Why won’t the CSCS recognise it as permitting me to get a Blue Card?

Good question! But the difference between a qualification gained in a training school or college and the NVQ is the NVQ requires the candidate’s skills in the workplace to be assessed.

What happened to the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment?

A couple of years ago, the majority of our experienced candidates came to SuperSkills for a practical assessment. Try as hard as we might, getting all the references to that route of assessment off the Internet seems impossible. We get calls regularly from people who have seen it. They ask us why they can’t get their painting qualification by practical assessment.
There’s a simple answer. “Covid” – which limited people’s ability to travel (and their willingness to do so). Covid also put up both the accommodation costs and price of materials. We didn’t want to pass that onto our customers.
At the same time the Awarding Bodies decided that evidence could be gathered by the candidate in their workplace. That, plus easy use of telephone and video calling, meant we could offer assessments remotely.
It also meant we could reduce the price of the assessment. That’s right – we passed our savings onto you!
