How To Get Your Site Carpentry NVQ

Getting a Site Carpentry NVQ is straightforward if you are already working as a carpenter.
Assessment is based on the work you do every day, not exams or classroom learning.

This page explains:

  • What a Site Carpentry NVQ is
  • Who it is suitable for
  • The difference between Level 2 and Level 3
  • How assessment works on real sites
  • What you need for a CSCS card

If you already know which level you need, you can go straight to the relevant course.
If not, this page will help you decide.

What is a Site Carpentry NVQ?

A Site Carpentry NVQ is a work-based qualification for carpenters who carry out their work on construction sites, not in workshops.

It proves that you can carry out carpentry work safely, competently, and to recognised industry standards.

There are:

  • No exams
  • No classroom learning
  • No college attendance

Assessment is based entirely on the work you already do on site.

Who is a Site Carpentry NVQ for?

A Site Carpentry NVQ is suitable if you:

  • Work as a carpenter on construction sites
  • Carry out tasks such as first fix, second fix, roofing, or structural carpentry
  • Have learned your trade on the job
  • Need a qualification for site access or a CSCS card
  • Want to qualify without taking time off work

If your work is mainly workshop-based, such as making doors, windows, or staircases, an Architectural Joinery NVQ is usually more appropriate.
(We assess those separately.)

Site Carpentry Level 2 or Level 3 – which do I need?

Choosing the right level matters. In simple terms:

Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2

This is the most common option.

It is suitable if you:

  • Work mainly on the tools
  • Carry out practical carpentry tasks on site
  • Follow drawings and instructions
  • Work under general supervision

Level 2 is required for a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card.

Site Carpentry NVQ Level 3

Level 3 is for more experienced carpenters.

It is suitable if you:

  • Take responsibility for complex carpentry work
  • Supervise others or coordinate tasks
  • Interpret drawings independently
  • Work with minimal supervision

Level 3 is required for a Gold CSCS card.

How does a Site Carpentry NVQ assessment work?

Assessment is based on real site work, not tests or written exams.

With SuperSkills, assessment usually includes:

  • Photos of your carpentry work on site
  • Short video clips showing tasks being carried out
  • Professional discussion with your assessor
  • Supporting documents where needed

How long does a Site Carpentry NVQ take?

There is no fixed duration.

How quickly you complete depends on:

  • Your experience
  • How quickly evidence can be gathered
  • How much time you can commit alongside work

Many experienced site carpenters complete their NVQ much faster than expected, especially with a structured remote assessment approach.
