The Law Relating To Slips, Trips and Falls

While there isn’t specific legislation solely focused on slips, trips, and falls in the UK, there are key pieces of legislation that place a duty on employers to ensure a safe working environment, which includes preventing them. Here are the two most relevant ones:

  1. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA): This act is the cornerstone of workplace safety legislation in the UK. It requires employers to ensure, “so far as is reasonably practicable,” the health, safety, and welfare of their employees and anyone affected by their work. This includes taking steps to control the risk of STFs.
  2. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992: These regulations provide more specific requirements for workplace safety and wellbeing. Regulation 12 specifically deals with floors and traffic routes, requiring them to be suitable, in good condition, and free from obstructions to allow people to move around safely. This directly relates to preventing STFs.

These pieces of legislation, together with guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), ensure employers have a legal responsibility to take reasonable steps to minimize the risk of STFs in the workplace.
