Health & Safety and the CSCS Partner Card

These DHF requirements and fees are separate from your SuperSkills NVQ assessment.
If you are unsure what you need, ask us. We deal with these applications regularly and can explain the route before you spend any money.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who is the Door, Gate & Shutter NVQ Level 2 suitable for?
This qualification is designed for experienced operatives who are already working in the door, gate & shutter trades and need formal recognition of their competence. Most candidates have at least 12 months’ on-site experience.
2. I already have a Level 2 Diploma in Door, Gate & Shutter Installation – why won’t DHF accept it?
A college diploma confirms training. DHF requires proof of occupational competence. The NVQ Level 2 is assessed in your workplace against National Occupational Standards, which is why it is accepted for a Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card.
3. Will the Door, Gate & Shutter NVQ Level 2 allow me to get a Blue CSCS Card?
Yes. This is the Level 2 NVQ required by DHF for its Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Partner Card.
You will also need to meet DHF’s current card requirements, which include its Health & Safety in the Environment (HS&E) test and the appropriate current DHF-approved course certificate(s) for the work you carry out. These are separate from the NVQ assessment.
4. How is the NVQ Level 2 assessed?
The assessment is based around your normal work. Your assessor will make at least one visit to see you working on site. Other evidence can then be collected using photographs, short videos, witness testimony and discussions with your assessor.
5. What evidence will I need to provide?
Evidence normally includes photographs or short videos of your work, answers to assessor questions and a witness statement from someone familiar with your work, such as a supervisor or employer.
Your assessor will also visit you in the workplace so they can directly observe the work they need to see.
6. How long does the Door, Gate & Shutter NVQ Level 2 take?
Most experienced candidates complete within 2 to 3 months, depending on how quickly evidence is gathered. There are no fixed classroom schedules.
7. Why is the CSCS card route different for Door, Gate & Shutter operatives?
Door, gate and shutter work is covered by a CSCS Partner Card scheme administered by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF).
This means you do not follow exactly the same application route as someone applying directly to CSCS for a standard construction occupation. The relevant card is the DHF Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Partner Card, and DHF sets the additional health, safety and industry-training requirements for it. DHF itself describes the arrangement as its CSCS card partner scheme.
8. What support will I receive during assessment?
You will be allocated a dedicated assessor who reviews your work promptly and supports you throughout. We regularly assist candidates who are not confident with paperwork or technology.
